Energy absorption capability of carbon/epoxy composite laminates: A novel numerical approach

While composite structures absorb energy well during crash events, crush-induced failure mechanisms and their effects on absorption characteristics are still unclear. Due to the complexity of process, Finite Element (FE) models applied estimate capability require a considerable amount computational time. This study presents novel numerical approach for crushing process AS4/8852 flat coupon plates in which cost is decreased by reducing number interfaces between plies modifying relevant properties. Experimental studies conducted cross-ply specimens [0/90] ns order understand discuss occurring detail influence plate thickness Specific Energy Absorption (SEA).
